When you reach the conclusion that Samsung’s folding phones have achieved their zenith, the company surprises you with new advancements that raise the bar for their upcoming product launches. August of 2022 saw the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the most advanced iteration of the company’s flagship folding gadget.
It demonstrates an updated model of the folding screen technology that they have developed. Samsung Display demonstrated at CES 2023 a new prototype display and hinge that can swivel in any direction over a full 360 degrees.
The term “Flex In & Out” refers to a display that will enable the user to fold the display inwards as well as outwards, which suggests that the hinge will have a completely new design. It has been said that the crease that would be generated by such a display will be less noticeable in comparison to the crease that is created by the folding screen technology that is now in use. Because of the design of the hinge, which is also known as a ‘water-drop hinge,’ the display will be able to form a more relaxed shape when it is folded inward. It is important to note that this is not the first time that Samsung has shown off a display with a “Flex In & Out” feature at one of their events. A presentation very similar to this one was shown off by the corporation in Korea back in the year 2021. The previous display can only be folded into the shape of an “S” using its segments, whereas the newer display can be folded inside as well as outwards.
The revolutionary display that folds to a full 360 degrees might find its way onto the next generation of Galaxy Fold smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 5G, which is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Incorporating the new hinge would also imply that the fold crease would be less pronounced in comparison to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which it would be replacing. Only time will tell if Samsung will be able to maintain its dominant position in the years to come, given that the Z series of smartphones manufactured by the company are currently in the dominant position in the global market for folding devices.
